From a Simple Storybook to a Movement for Safer Childhoods

Every meaningful journey has a beginning often small, sometimes uncertain, but always driven by purpose. Ours began with a simple but urgent realization: children need safer spaces, and they also need to be taught how to stay safe. This led to the creation of a safety storybook, Sam learns Safety, authored by our Founder, and designed to help children learn safety in a way they could understand and remember.

However, as we took the book into schools, what started as a mission to promote safety education quickly revealed something deeper. In engaging with educators and school systems, we uncovered broader gaps in child safeguarding practices and in that moment, a greater purpose emerged beyond the book itself.

Before Safekids Foundation Lagos came to life, our work began under a different name Safekids Consult. Through it, we engaged schools, trained educators, and worked with organizations to introduce structured approaches to child safety and safeguarding. It allowed us to step into spaces where awareness was low but the need was high. We saw firsthand the gaps in school safety systems, the lack of coordinated safeguarding practices, and the pressing need for collaboration among stakeholders.

Nevertheless, as the work grew, so did the vision. We began to realize that child safety goes beyond consultancy. It is not just a service-it is a shared responsibility, one that requires sustained advocacy, community engagement, and a broader platform that brings together educators, parents, institutions, and policymakers. That realization led to a transition.

Today, we operate as Safekids Foundation Lagos, a registered foundation fully dedicated to advancing child protection through advocacy, capacity building, and stakeholder collaboration. This shift reflects not just a change in name, but an expansion in purpose from providing services to building a movement for safer childhoods. However, as you explore our website, you may still come across references to Safekids Consult. This is intentional because at the time, Safekids Consult was our vehicle for action.

Those elements represent the foundation of our journey the early works, the original structures, and the experiences that shaped who we are today. Rather than erase that history, we have chosen to honour it. It serves as a reminder that meaningful impact is built over time, and that every step, no matter how small, contributes to a larger vision. In many ways, Safekids Consult is not separate from Safekids Foundation Lagos; it is where we learned, where we started, and how we grew.

As we continue this journey, our commitment remains clear; to strengthen systems, empower stakeholders, and ensure that every child is protected, supported, and safe.
